The tap changer of a power transformer primarily adjusts the voltage ratio by altering the tap connections on the high-voltage winding, thereby increasing or decreasing the number of turns in the winding. During the transmission of electrical energy in a power system, losses in both voltage and power are inevitably incurred.

For a given transmitted power, voltage loss is inversely proportional to the voltage, while power loss is inversely proportional to the square of the voltage. By using transformers to step up the voltage, transmission losses are reduced.
