To improve the quality of the supply voltage, power transformers are typically equipped with tap changers.

Tap changers are broadly classified into two main types: no-load tap changers (also known as off‑load tap changers) and on‑load tap changers. No‑load tap changers adjust the tap position when the transformer is de‑energized and therefore cannot interrupt load current. On‑load tap changers, by contrast, allow tap adjustment under load without interrupting power supply, enabling the tap to be set at an appropriate position. Because they operate under load, the contacts (or portions of the contacts) of on‑load tap changers must be capable of breaking load currents.
